Learn While You Listen
- All of Dr. Acula‘s songs are titled after books from RL Stine’s Goosebumps series. If you’re a 90s kid, you surely remember those!
- American Nightmare, faced with a legal battle over their band name (someone else claimed it), changed their name briefly to American Nothing and finally settled on Give Up the Ghost in 2003. I still call them American Nightmare.
- Communique is made up of the band that was formerly American Steel. They changed their name when they decided to go in a new direction with their music.
- Joy Division is Geoff Rickly of Thursday‘s favorite band. Thursday has a song entitled Ian Curtis on their 1999 album, Waiting.
- Van Morrisson‘s Brown Eyed Girl song was original titled Brown-Skinned Girl.
- Nirvana frontman, Kurt Cobain, was a very big fan of The Pixies, and admits they were a strong influence in the music he wrote.
- The Mars Volta was formed after singer Cedric Bixler-Zavala and guitarist Omar Rodriguez-Lopez left their band, At the Drive-In, in 2001. The remaining members of At the Drive-In went on to form Sparta.
- Neon Blonde consists of a singer (Johnny Whitney) and drummer (Mark Gajadhar) from the band The Blood Brothers, which is why the vocals sound very similar in the two bands.
- What do Swing Kids, The Locust, and Some Girls have in common? Justin Pearson was a member! Justin’s record label, Three One G, takes it’s name from a Joy Division lyric in the song Warsaw, which Swing Kids covered…. go listen!
- New Order was formed from the remaining members of Joy Division after Ian Curtis committed suicide. They have a more electro-dance sound as oppossed to post-punk.
- I Hate Myself never gave a title to any of their albums or any of their singles. Records are simply called “10 songs”, “4 songs”, etc.
- Portugal. The Man consists of former members of the band Anatomy of a Ghost. You can kind of tell, right?
