Domain

I started blogging on sites like blurty.com and livejournal.com about a year before I bought my very first domain, pink-pistol.net on July 28, 2004. In July 2006, I purchased loveisdead.net and moved my blog here. I continue to use pink-pistol.net for various projects including my fanlistings, hosting, cam portal, and magazine scans.

I stole the idea for this domain name from the lyrics of a Thursday song released in 2002, called Jet Black New Year. The lyrics actually reference another great song called Newspaper Tragedy by defunct Philadelphia band, Ink & Dagger. The lyrics to both songs are below.

Jet Black New Year by Thursday

Don’t even take a breath.
The air is cut with cyanide,
In honor of the New Year.

The press gives us cause to celebrate:
These air raid sirens
Flooded barbed wire skylines,
By artificial night,
As we sleep to burn the red
From our bloodless lives.
Tonight we’re all time bombs
on fault lines.

Have we lost everything now?
We’re walking like each other’s ghosts
Around these silent streets (the sedatives tell you everything is alright)
Like calendars dying at New Year’s Eve parties,
As we kiss hard on the lips
And swear this year will be better than the last.

Jet Black – the ink that spells your name.
Jet Black – the blood that’s in your veins.
We say, “How long can we take this chance not to celebrate?”

There’s music playing
But we dance to the beat
Of our own black hearts
And draw diagrams
Of suicide on each other’s wrists,
Then trace them with razorblades.

Fire to Flames,
“Strike Match.”

Burn these words from our lips
As ‘The Dagger’ screams,
“Love is dead,”
and it’s a “newspaper tragedy.”

Have we lost what we love?
Have we said everything?
Does it change anything?
Stare at the clock,
Avoid at all costs,
This emptiness.

Ten seconds left
until midnight.
Nine chances to drown ourselves
in black hair dye.
Eight faces turned away
from the shock:
Seven windows and six of them
were locked.
Five stories falling.
Forever and ever.
Three cheers to the mirror,
Now there are two of us.
Can we have one last dance?
How long can we take this chance not to celebrate life?

Newspaper Tragedy by Ink & Dagger

Romance in the air
the vampires don’t care
Today the headline read;
“They said love was dead!”
(the vampires killed it dead)

Love is dead

(I saw it in)
Black and white
with read/red all over

Love is dead

What does it all mean?

But Ashley, isn’t it ironic that you have a domain titled “love is dead” yet you talk about how much you love your boyfriend in your posts?
This is an observation someone made before, which is why I want to make something clear:

The truth is, I do believe love exists. I see love and kindness firsthand every single day. I am completely in love with my boyfriend of 7 years. When I claim “love is dead” I mean that love is, in a sense, out of fashion. Love is dead the way punk rock or poetry is dead. Love is “culturally insignificant.” We are part of a culture that wants to fuck fuck fuck all of the time and we needed to redefine (and kill) love in order to fulfill that goal. We have separated love from sex, exploiting sex and alienating love. So my motivation for saying “love is dead” comes from a truly romantic ideal that I hold, and the sadness this ideal has brought upon me when I am faced with 21st century reality.
