PSD Thumbnails in Windows Explorer

If you’ve ever used an older version of Photoshop (like PS 7) you will remember when you could view thumbnails for Photoshop files in Windows Explorer. With Photoshop CS and newer, this feature is gone and you simply see a Photoshop icon for PSD files, instead of a preview thumbnail like with Jpeg or Gif images. Thankfully, it is pretty easy to remedy the problem.

  1. Download this file and extract it to your desktop.
  2. Inside the folder you just extracted, right click on psicon.dll and copy.
  3. Now paste the file into C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Shell (if the “Shell” folder doesn’t exist, create it.)
  4. Back in the folder you extracted to your desktop, run the Adobe.reg file.
  5. When you see the prompt window, click yes.
  6. Now you can view PSD files in thumbnail view within explorer.
